A southeast Kansas man has been arrested in connection to a recent officer-involved shooting in Bourbon County.

George White III, 47, was arrested Tuesday following his release from St. Luke’s Hospital. Authorities initially booked White, of Pittsburg, Kansas, into the Jackson County Detention Center.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation identified White as the suspect in the officer-involved shooting May 7 in Bourbon County. White was arrested on a Crawford County warrant for aggravated assault, theft of $100,000 or more, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and misdemeanor theft, a KBI news release on Wednesday stated.

Late on the night of May 7, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stolen semi-truck headed north out of Pittsburg.

“The vehicle was reported to be driving into oncoming traffic and fleeing from local law enforcement,” a KBI release stated. “Crawford County deputies pursued the vehicle after the driver refused an attempted traffic stop.

“During the pursuit, the suspect continued to drive the wrong way in the southbound lanes.”

At one point, deputies attempted to disable the vehicle. They were unsuccessful, the release said.

“As the pursuit continued into Bourbon County, two Crawford County deputies discharged their firearms, striking the suspect and vehicle,” the release said. “The suspect lost control of the vehicle near Highway 69 and Indian Road and was taken into custody.”

White initially was treated at a local hospital and then transferred to St. Luke’s.
