Johnson County was recently named the wealthiest county in Kansas by finance website SmartAsset, and the analysis found Sedgwick County the 11th richest.

While Sedgwick County just missed the top 10 this year, with a median income of $65,372, several areas in northeast Kansas made the list. SmartAsset reported Sedgwick County’s median home value is $217,119 and its investment income is $79,155.

SmartAsset used sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau, real estate site Zillow and the U.S. Internal Revenue Service to compile the ranking. The three metrics considered included investment income, property value and median income. The most recent ranking reflects data from 2024, the finance website says.

Neighboring Butler County made the list of the state’s top 10 wealthiest counties, with a median income of $77,724.

Statewide, Kansas’ median household income is $72,639, according to the Census Bureau, and 11.2% of the state’s residents live in poverty. In this year’s ranking, several counties changed places compared to 2023’s list.
