After a flight that originated in Wichita collided with a helicopter in Washington, D.C., people with loved ones aboard are sure to be desperate for details.

People checking in on passengers on American Airlines flight 5342 should call the airline at 1-800-679-8215 for information.

Wichita’s Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport also has people there available for those who want to ask questions in person.

“We have a lot of volunteers that come in to help out in a situation like this that will be here in the terminal if they do want to come to this point,” Jesse Romo, Wichita’s director of airports, said during a Wednesday press conference. “But we also encourage them to stay home and stay in contact with the airline.”

Several family members are currently at the Wichita airport seeking assistance.

The National Transportation Safety Board’s website tells people to call the airline immediately after a possible crash if they believe their loved one was on board. The NTSB, who is likely to investigate the crash, can also be contacted at assistance@ntsb.gov and 202-314-6185.

As of 10 p.m. Wednesday, D.C. Fire and Police are leading the search and rescue efforts but have not provided a place for family or friends to contact them. They have not officially released any information on casualties.

According to American Airlines, 60 passengers and four crew members were on board. At least eight victims have been pulled out from the Potomac River as of 10:15 p.m.

“It just breaks our heart to hear something like this occur,” Romo said. “It’s devastating for everyone.”

American Airlines’ direct flight from Wichita to D.C. is a new addition, only starting service Jan. 8, 2024. The airlines offers the flight Sunday-Friday.
