Which of these Kansas license plates do you like? Drivers can now vote on new designs
Kansans decided on a new standard license plate design in 2023, and now they have the opportunity to pick a design for personalized plates in 2024.
The Kansas Department of Revenue has released five new designs for residents to vote on and pick their favorite. Voting is open now and closes at 5 p.m. Friday. People can cast their votes at ksplates.kansas.gov.
“We know how passionate Kansans are about license plates, and this initiative aims to give the public a direct say in selecting the next personalized plate design that will be featured on vehicles across the state for years to come,” David Harper, director of KDOR division of vehicles, said in a statement. “We look forward to seeing which design Kansans choose.”
KDOR said this round of plate designs is different from what Kansans voted on in December. They used feedback from 2023’s voting to pick the designs for the 2024 personalized plate, including an outline of Kansas, wheat and sunflowers.
The design featuring wheat on the sides of the license plate numbers with a white and sky blue background was one of the options residents could’ve picked for the default state-issued license plates in 2023.
The winning design will replace the current “Powering the Future” design, which has wind turbines on a dark orange and yellow background. The new design will enter production and will be able to purchase in 2025.
How much does a personalized license plate cost in Kansas?
A personalized license plate will set you back $45.50, according to KDOR, in addition to regular registration costs. You pay the fee when you apply for the license plate.
The plates allow for a maximum of seven characters (numbers, letters and spaces) on cars and trucks and no more than five characters on motorcycles. No types of symbols, like exclamation points or question marks, can be used on license plates.
Each plate is issued for five years, and the five-year cycle begins in a year that ends with a zero or five. So if you get a license plate in 2026, you will have to apply for a new one in 2030, even though you have only had the plate for four years.
To get a personalized license plate, you must:
- Be a Kansas resident or a member of the military who is not a Kansas resident and is stationed at a Kansas military base or office.
- Have a Kansas title in your name or the leasing company’s name for the vehicle for which the personalized plate is to be issued.
- Have a vehicle titled as an antique if you’re applying for an antique personalized plate.
- Have a registered car, motorcycle or truck weigh 20,000 pounds or less.
You can apply for a personalized license plate at your local county treasurer’s motor vehicle office. You can fill out and print a form to take with you when you apply.
Any combination of characters that have profane, lewd, vulgar or indecent meanings or connotations are not allowed, KDOR says.
