A prisoner died after potentially being strangled in a cell at the Lansing Correctional Facility, according to a release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Just after 8:30 p.m. Friday, correctional officers were summoned to a two-person cell by a 25-year-old inside it to find Gary Raburn, 62, unresponsive. Raburn appeared to have been attacked, according to KBI.

Emergency services arrived at the scene and made several attempts to revive the inmate. He was declared dead at 9:30 p.m., the release indicates.

The Kansas Department of Corrections and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the circumstances of his death, though a suspect has been identified.

Charges in the matter are pending, according to KBI, and an autopsy has yet to be conducted.

Raburn died while serving a sentence for two counts of violating the Kansas Offender Registration Act. He was at the facility for less than a year after having been admitted in March, according to the KDOC.

The inmate’s underlying offenses stem from a Neosho County aggravated kidnapping charge in 2005 and a 2017 Sedgwick County charge for violating the Kansas Offender Registration Act.

No further information about Raburn’s death has been released.
