Man trying to save dog from ‘fast-moving creek’ jumps in and dies, Kansas sheriff says
A man trying to save a dog from a creek died after jumping into the water Friday morning, according to a Kansas sheriff.
Two men were working on land near Mission Creek in Shawnee County in northeast Kansas when the dog entered the water, according to Shawnee County Sheriff Brian Hill.
The man jumped after the dog and was swept under “fast-moving” water, according to a news release. The other man tried to rescue him but was unsuccessful.
The sheriff’s office received the 911 call of a possible drowning shortly after 9:40 a.m. When rescue crews arrived, they spotted the man but couldn’t reach him before he went farther downstream, WIBW reported.
The men had been working on a boat when the dog jumped in the water, the Topeka TV station reported.
The sheriff’s office and other agencies now are trying to recover the man’s body. His identity hasn’t been released.
Police have not indicated whether the dog survived.
