Second inmate from Kansas prison dies after testing positive for coronavirus

Another inmate from the Lansing Correctional Facility in Kansas has died after testing positive for the coronavirus, the state prison system announced.

The inmate — a man over the age of 60 who had underlying medical conditions — died Wednesday, according to a news release from the Kansas Department of Corrections. He had tested positive for COVID-19 on April 25 after being transferred to KU Medical Center. KDOC said it would not release the inmate’s name.

The number of cases at the Lansing facility has grown since the first few were reported March 31. As of Wednesday, 76 inmates and 75 staff members have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the KDOC website. Forty-nine inmates have recovered from the disease and 15 staff members have returned to work. Two inmates have died, including the death announced Wednesday.

State officials announced the first inmate death during an April 27 news conference. A man over the age of 50, who was said to have underlying medical conditions, died last weekend after receiving a positive test. He resided at the Lansing facility.
