American Jazz, Negro Leagues Baseball museums to reopen next week in KC

The American Jazz and Negro Leagues Baseball museums in Kansas City’s 18th & Vine historic entertainment district announced Thursday that they will reopen next week with new measures to protect against COVID-19.

The museums at 1616 E 18th St. said in Facebook posts that they will be welcoming back jazz and baseball fans on Tuesday.

“We have taken careful precautions to keep our visitors, staff and volunteers safe,” the jazz museum said in a release Thursday.

The museums are following guidance from health agencies at the local, state and federal levels and had partnered with the KC Culture Cares group to welcome visitors back to 18th and Vine.

As part of the new measures, the two museum have modified hours and will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. They will be closed on Mondays.

The two museums also will adjust its hours to 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 4th.

The museums will also have a two-step admission process where visitors must reserve a time at jazzandbaseballkc.eventbrite.com and then purchase a ticket to the museums. The museums recommend people purchase the tickets online at americanjazzmuseum.org.

The reservation, which is required to enter the building, will allow the jazz and baseball museums to track occupancy limits within their shared building.

Other safety precautions include:

  • Visitors are strongly recommended to wear face masks, which will be required of all staff.
  • The number of visitors will be limited to allow proper social distancing and to meet local capacity limitations.
  • Hand-sanitizing stations will be placed throughout the museum.
  • Cleaning with a disinfectant will be increased throughout the museum.
  • Extra protective measures will be in place for interactive exhibits.
  • Visitors are asked to stay home if not feeling well.

The Blue Room will remain closed and group tour reservations and guided tours are unavailable. Also, people will not be able to check coats, backpacks or other items.
