Is your gym open? While some national brands reopen in KC, some are still closed
Starting Friday, gyms and fitness centers are allowed to reopen in Kansas City as mayor Quinton Lucas’ stay-at-home orders ease. They must abide by the “10/10/10” rule, meaning a maximum occupancy of 10% of capacity or 10 people, whichever is greater.
But your gym chain might not be open despite being allowed to do so.
Both Life Time and Planet Fitness are working toward reopening dates, a spokesperson for each company told The Star.
The Kansas City location of Anytime Fitness at 7000 NW 83rd Street is up and running. But members must make a reservation to limit the amount of people in the gym.
For OrangeTheory Fitness members, depending on the location, classes will begin starting May 26, though that date is still subject to change. The downtown Kansas City, Parkville and Brookside locations are gearing up to return.
Extra precautions will be taken in spaces where many people sweat and share equipment. At OrangeTheory, there will be more hand sanitizing stations and the showers will be closed.
Once Planet Fitness is up and running, the company will be taking more precautions, a spokesperson said. Those safety measures include touchless check-in and “cardio distancing,” where certain equipment won’t be available to keep members spaced apart.
“We know authorities have provided the approval for some businesses to begin reopening, including health clubs,” a Life Time spokesperson said in a statement. “Our team is eager to get back and we’ll do so quickly once when we know most of our members and team members have the confidence and peace of mind that Life Time will deliver the safest environments in our communities.”
