Bernie Sanders says Democrats ‘abandoned working class people’ in response to Trump win

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders released a scathing critique of the Democratic Party and Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, following President-elect Donald Trump’s election victory.

“It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them,” Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, wrote in a Nov. 6 post on social media.

“While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change,” he said.

Sanders — who twice ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination — went on to indict the party for failing to address major economic, health care and foreign policy problems.

The majority of Americans “are living paycheck to paycheck,” and “many young people will have a worse standard of living than their parents,” he said.

“We remain the only wealthy nation not to guarantee health care to all as a human right,” he added.

Sanders, who is Jewish, also addressed the Biden administration’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war.

“Today, despite strong opposition from a majority of Americans, we continue to spend billions funding the extremist Netanyahu government’s all out war against the Palestinian people …”

While he campaigned for both President Joe Biden and Harris, Sanders has been outspoken about his opposition to the way Israel has prosecuted the war.

He continued: “Will the big money interests and well-paid consultants who control the Democratic Party learn any real lessons from this disastrous campaign? ... In the coming weeks and months those of us concerned about grassroots democracy and economic justice need to have some very serious political discussions,” he concluded.
