Wyandotte County voters on Tuesday narrowed the pool of candidates running to represent them on the Unified Government’s Board of Commissioners.

Candidates are vying to fill five seats on the governing body, which makes policy decisions across Wyandotte County. The general election Nov. 7 will reshape the board for the next four years.

In the primary election Tuesday, voters advanced Bills Burns and Anna Cole in the race for District 2, which includes the Riverview and Armourdale neighborhoods, according to unofficial results. The current commissioner, Brian McKiernan, is not seeking re-election.

Commissioner Christian Ramirez and challenger Tina Medina will move on to the general election in the race for District 3, which includes the Rosedale and Argentine neighborhoods. Ramirez was elected to represent the area in 2019.

In the race for District 4, which includes the northern part of the Kensington neighborhood, voters nominated Evelyn Hill and Tarence Maddox, knocking out two other candidates. Commissioner Harold Johnson is not running for re-election there.

In the 6th District, which covers south central KCK, Philip Lopez and Steve Neal advanced in the race to fill the seat held by Commissioner Angela Markley, who is not seeking re-election.

Voters on Tuesday also narrowed the pool of candidates running for seats on the Board of Public Utilities, the publicly-owned utility that recently drew ire from some residents over increased electric rates.

Stevie Wakes Sr. and Alex Sanchez advanced in the race for BPU’s District 1 — a seat that has belonged for more than three decades to Robert Milan Sr., who is not seeking re-election.

BPU board member Jeffrey Bryant, who has served since 2011, and challenger Brett Parker will be on the ballot for District 3.

Of Wyandotte County’s more than 89,000 registered voters, about 6,000 voted in Tuesday’s primary election, amounting to a 6.78% voter turnout, according to county’s elections office.

On Nov. 7, voters will also choose between At-large District 1 Commissioner Melissa Bynum, who has served on the UG’s board of commissioners since 2015, and challenger Ricky Smith.

In another race, voters will additionally decide then between BPU board member Rose Mulvany Henry, who has served since 2019, and challenger CeCe Harlin in the race for At‐Large Position 3.
