Independence mayor says Tuesday vote shows community support for first responders
The mayor in Independence lauded voters after two ballot initiatives on additional police and fire resources were passed in Tuesday’s election.
“Tonight, our citizens have once again shown their tremendous support for our Independence first responders,” Mayor Eileen Weir said in a statement posted Tuesday.
The first ballot initiative will provide more funds to hire additional firefighters and replace five aging fire stations, among other improvements, through an increased Fire Protection Sales Tax.
Proposition P, the second initiative, will help fund police department personnel and equipment. According to the city, ongoing challenges include recruitment, a growing number of calls for service, and increasing costs of technology and equipment that officers use.
“We look forward to providing regular updates on how these funds are used for our first responders in the months and years to come,” Weir said.
