A Missouri lawmaker’s call for “manly firmness” in resisting the Affordable Care Act drew chuckles Tuesday — and a few frowns as well.

Missouri Rep. Mike Moon, an Ash Grove Republican, introduced a resolution calling on the state’s congressional delegation to seek full repeal of Obamacare with “manly firmness,” a phrase found in the Declaration of Independence.

Two of the state’s representatives in the U.S. House are women, as is Sen. Claire McCaskill. She wasn’t amused.

“I don’t think you prove your manhood by kicking folks off their health coverage,” the Democrat said in a statement.

Moon’s appeal to presumed masculine inflexibility prompted a predictable torrent of Twitter-based snark, but he told the Columbia Daily Tribune he meant no offense. He just really, really dislikes Obamacare.

“It is just like going to war,” Moon told the newspaper. “You want a soldier to fight like a man. If a woman is in the trenches, you want them to fight like a man too.”
