Missouri Republicans fill out national convention slate
Longtime conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly and U.S. Rep. Sam Graves were among 25 at-large national convention delegates selected by Missouri Republicans at their meeting Saturday in Branson.
The 25-person slate finalizes the party’s delegation to the July convention in Cleveland.
Delegates were awarded in proportion to the outcome of the March 15 state primary. Of the 25 delegates picked Saturday, 19 will be pledged to presumptive nominee Donald Trump, including Schlafly. Six at-large delegates are pledged to Sen. Ted Cruz, who finished second in the primary.
Three party leaders are already pledged to Trump, as are 15 delegates picked earlier at the congressional district level. Cruz won nine district-level delegates.
Four weeks ago Republicans worried about a state-level dust-up over Missouri’s delegates, but Trump’s presumptive victory largely put those fears to rest.
Among the other delegates picked Saturday were Mark Anthony Jones, chairman of the Jackson County Republican Party; Missouri House Speaker Todd Richardson; and U.S. Rep. Jason Smith.
