Religious colleges exempt from parts of Title IX law
The U.S. Department of Education expects to release the names of faith-based colleges getting exemptions from provisions on gender-equity in Title IX law because those statements conflict with the school’s religious beliefs.
The Chronicle of Higher Education reported on Tuesday that the nation’s education department will publish the a list of religious colleges “in coming months.” That such exemptions were granted became public through a letter last week from Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, Catherine E. Lhamon to U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon.
According to the Chronicle “dozens of religious colleges have been granted waivers that exempt them from having to enforce provisions of the law that run counter to their religious tenets.” The parts of the law these religious colleges are pointing to relate to gender identity and sexual orientation.
