Mayor James, Seth Sinovic headline Christmas tree lighting

Kansas City Mayor Sly James and Sporting KC’s Seth Sinovic will headline the annual Mayor’s Christmas Tree lighting ceremony on Friday.

Sinovic, a Kansas City-area native who has been called Sporting’s “most durable player,” is the featured celebrity for this year’s event, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Crown Center Square. The Marine Color Guard will be on hand, along with the Coterie Theater group and the Heartland Men’s Chorus. Fireworks follow the ceremony.

The tree symbolizes the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund, which each year helps as many as 7,000 needy families. Donations provide gift cards, holiday parties and gifts for qualified applicants. After the holidays, the tree wood is made into commemorative ornaments, which are sold the following year to benefit the fund.

The 2014 ornament goes on sale Friday at the Crown Center Customer Service office for $13.95.

The link to donate to the fund is at: https://www.kcmo.org/XmasTreeFund/faces/DonationForm.jspx.
