RNC sues FEC to raise unlimited cash

The Republican National Committee is suing the Federal Election Commission so it can raise unlimited cash just like super PACs.

The RNC has filed a lawsuit asking for permission to ask donors to bankroll a technically independent pot of money that would help federal candidates. This money would be separate from the candidates’ own fundraising, and the RNC could not coordinate with the candidates on spending it.

GOP Chairman Reince Priebus says the RNC is at a disadvantage against super PACs and wants to be “treated equally under the law.”

Super PACs can accept unlimited donations but cannot coordinate with the candidates they support. Donations to the RNC are currently limited to less than $33,000 each year
