U.S. House passes amendment naming KC’s Liberty Memorial the ‘national World War I museum and memorial’

The U.S. House on Wednesday passed an amendment designating the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City the “National World War I Museum and Memorial,” according to Rep. Emanuel Cleaver’s office.

Cleaver’s amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act also designates Pershing Park in Washington D.C. as the “National World War I Memorial.”

The step is another attempt at compromise between supporters of the designation for Kansas City and those who want the distinction for the nation’s capital. Similar language was removed from the bill last year that created a World War I centennial commission anchored at the Liberty Memorial.

The memorial here already has the distinction of being the national museum to the Great War.
