The Kansas City Council’s Planning, Zoning and Economic Development Committee endorsed a final plan Wednesday for a second apartment building at St. Michael’s center for homeless veterans.

The full council votes on the measure Thursday. Supporters said they hope construction can begin this fall and finish in about a year.

Construction originally had been slated to start in March, but delays occurred with the final plat, which subdivides the St. Michael’s Veterans Center property for the second building, just south of the VA Medical Center.

This new phase calls for an apartment building with 59 residential units and a 7,000-square-foot veterans center. It follows the first building, which opened with 58 units in July 2014 and quickly leased up with homeless or near homeless veterans at 3838 Chelsea Drive.
