Kansas City lost out to a Maryland agency Tuesday in its quest for national recognition for parks and recreation management.

Kansas City had been a finalist for the national excellence award in the large city category, but the gold medal winner for that group was the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.

The awards were announced at the 2015 National Recreation and Park Association annual conference in Las Vegas.

The other finalists in the large city category were the parks systems in Cleveland, Ohio, and Mesa, Ariz.

Kansas City was also a finalist in 2011 but has never won the gold medal award.
