Clay County schools invited to enroll in spelling bee

Clay County schools are invited to enroll now in the Jackson-Clay County Spelling Bee scheduled for February 2015.

This is the first year that Clay County schools have participated in the spelling bee sponsored by The Kansas City Public Library, said Mary Olive Thompson, director of library outreach and community engagement.

“Right now we have 97 schools (in Clay and Jackson) enrolled to participate. I would love to see that up over a hundred,” she said.

The bee will include eight school districts in Clay County and 11 in Jackson County, as well as home school associations.

Enrollment runs through Dec. 12 and can be done at www.spellingbee.com.

School winners will advance to a division bee and division bee winners will advance to the Jackson-Clay County Championship Spelling Bee. The top winner there will represent Jackson and Clay counties at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in the spring.

Kansas City had the top view-ership in the nation for the Scripps Bee, said Thompson.

Other bee sponsors are Mid-Continent Public Library and the Local Investment Commission (LINC).
