More time needed to resolve dispute over diocese housing proposal
Two sides that have been battling over a proposal for Catholic student housing near Rockhurst University need more time to resolve their differences.
The Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph wants a student housing development at 53rd Street and Troost Avenue, while many members of St. Francis Xavier Church and surrounding neighborhoods do not.
Last month, the mayor’s office had asked the rival factions to work with a mediator and try to come to some consensus by Aug. 20. A St. Francis Xavier representative said Wednesday that the two sides have not yet met but are trying to figure out ground rules for future meetings to seek a resolution.
As a result, the mayor’s office extended the deadline for another 30 days, to provide more time before the City Council considers any plan for the site of the former St. Francis Xavier School.
