Former U.S. Senate hopeful Milton Wolf will confront Sen. Jerry Moran of Kansas
Call it the showdown in Wamego, Kan.
Milton Wolf, the 2014 U.S. Senate candidate from Kansas who gave Pat Roberts a run for his money, was back again Saturday, rattling his saber at a different Kansas Republican — U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran.
On Facebook, Wolf posted that he would be seeing Moran on Monday morning in Wamego, Kan., in the northeast corner of the state, where Moran planned a 9:30 a.m. stop at the telephone company. The visit is part of Moran’s statewide listening tour.
Wolf said he had a “few questions” he’d like to ask Moran.
The backstory: Wolf, a tea party favorite, has flirted publicly with the idea of challenging Moran in the 2016 U.S. Senate primary. We’re at the point in the cycle where Wolf has to make a decision.
His Facebook post is the most aggressive move Wolf has made so far directed at Moran.
More backstory: This past week, Wolf announced that the Kansas Board of Healing Arts had cleared him in an investigation connected to his 2014 campaign against Roberts. (It should be added that there’s no written proof that the board has done this.) In July 2014, near that end of that campaign, The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that the board was looking into Wolf’s Facebook posts from years earlier in which he posted gruesome gunshot photos of some of his medical patients complete with tongue-in-cheek commentary.
Wolf is a Johnson County radiologist.
Wolf is convinced that Kansas’ GOP establishment was behind the probe in an effort to undermine his bid in a close primary contest.
In Saturday’s Facebook post, Wolf linked to an article on his personal website titled “Weaponizing the Government: Laws Violated, Evidence Destroyed, GOP Insiders Caught Red-Handed” in which he lays out his case.
The story includes a photograph of Moran and Roberts with Gov. Sam Brownback. So far, no conclusive evidence has surfaced that links any of the three to the board’s investigation, though Wolf has raised questions about one board member who also was a Roberts backer.
Wolf’s Facebook post says: “Hey Jerry Moran. I see you’ll be in Wamego Monday morning. Perfect. I have a few questions for you. See you then.
“Kansas Republicans, you should definitely join us!”
If Wolf finally decides to challenge Moran next year, the campaign may begin Monday morning in Wamego.
