Bob Dole, animal lover

AP

Puppies, kittens and horse handlers: It’s a “Paws for Celebration,” and Kansas’ native son Bob Dole is inviting animal lovers to check out the pets at a D.C. adoption event Thursday.

Local rescue groups will bring the animals, and the horse experts will provide information about equine therapy, according to Roll Call. There will be art, too, from a group called Pinups for Pitbulls.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is helping coordinate the bipartisan gathering that includes U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, an Oregon Democrat and co-chair of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus. Dole, a Republican and former Senate majority leader, is a special adviser to the Humane Society of the United States.

“The ASPCA is honored that Sen. Bob Dole, author of critical amendments to the Animal Welfare Act, will join us … to raise awareness of animal welfare issues in Congress,” said ASPCA’s Nancy Perry in a statement.
