Kansas Democratic Rep. Sharice Davids praised President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the presidential race on Sunday but didn’t immediately endorse Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic nominee.

“President Biden has dedicated his life to serving our country and his time as our President has restored decency to the highest office. By stepping aside from the presidential race today, he has once again put the future of our country first,” Davids said in a statement.

Davids, who represents Kansas’ 3rd Congressional District, said now was the time “for a new generation of leadership capable of defeating Donald Trump and fighting back against the growing extremism in our nation.”

The statement didn’t endorse Harris or any other candidate. Biden endorsed Harris on Sunday.

“Kansas families remain my top priority, and I am committed to doing everything in my power to deliver for them this November and beyond,” Davids said.

Davids, who is seeking a fourth term, will face either Prasanth Reddy or Karen Crnkovich, who are both running for the Republican nomination. The 3rd District covers Johnson County and a swath of rural area southwest of the Kansas City metro.

Before Biden’s announcement, Davids had declined to say whether Biden should exit the race, which Reddy has seized on.

On Sunday, Reddy said in a statement that Davids “cannot run from this any longer. Her partisan silence is deafening. If President Biden is not in good enough shape to run, how can she continue to support him as President?”

Reddy concluded by asking if Davids stands by Biden-Harris administration policies.
