Republicans have floated former state Sen. Kurt Schaefer, a Columbia Republican, as a potential candidate for Missouri’s next attorney general to replace Senator-elect Eric Schmitt.

Sources familiar with the appointment process said Missouri Gov. Mike Parson has interviewed Schaefer for the position.

Schaefer served in the Missouri Senate from 2009 to 2017. In 2016, he ran against Josh Hawley for Missouri attorney general but was defeated in the Republican primary.

He now works as a lobbyist and lawyer with Lathrop GPM.
