Trump endorses former Kansas City TV anchor Mark Alford, citing ‘honest and fair’ coverage
Mark Alford, the Republican nominee in Missouri’s 4th Congressional District, has secured the endorsement of former President Donald Trump in a race the former Kansas City TV anchor is favored to win.
The endorsement, in which Trump praised Alford’s journalism, came hours after The Star published a story that included several former colleagues describing Alford as a toxic, bullying presence at his former station Fox 4, where he anchored mornings for 23 years. He had previously worked in TV news in Texas.
“Mark worked for 35 years as a local news anchor, and his coverage was honest and fair, unlike the Corrupt Fake News, which continues to divide and destroy our Great Country,” Trump said in a statement.
Alford announced the endorsement Wednesday night at a campaign event in Raymore with KCMO Talk Radio host Pete Mundo. Trump also released the endorsement Wednesday on his Truth Social platform. It was sent out in a release by his PAC the following day.
At the event, Alford said he knew the endorsement was coming and had received a call from Trump earlier Wednesday, according to video posted by KCMO Talk Radio.
Alford has campaigned as a staunch conservative, condemning pushes for gun control and COVID-19 mandates. He has also embraced Trump’s call for a border wall with Mexico.
Alford faces Democrat Jack Truman, who has said he raised just $700 and donated $600 to his own campaign. Alford has raised nearly $714,000, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.
Trump also endorsed Republican Eric Burlison, who is running for the open seat in Missouri’s 7th District. The district, which includes the southwest area of the state, is heavily Republican.
