Environmental news site calls Kansas Senate race ‘Climate Hawk’ vs. ‘Climate Skeptic’

A non-partisan environmental news site looked at the Kansas Senate race through its lens Wednesday.

The takeaway: while Democrat Barbara Bollier and Republican Roger Marshall both hold medical degrees from the University of Kansas, “their adherence to the rigors of science” seems to diverge on climate change.

“Bollier says (climate change) represents a major economic and health threat; Marshall questions whether it exists at all,” wrote InsideClmate News reporter Georgina Gustin.

Bollier, described in the headline as a ‘Climate Hawk,’ cites climate change as an urgent issue. Marshall — he’s labeled ‘Climate Skeptic’ — has backed President Donald Trump’s view, telling KSN TV in 2017, “I’m not sure that there is even climate change. But I think it’s something that we should continue to study and make sure our ecology continues to improve.”

The article also touches on their different approaches to campaigning in a pandemic. Early on, Bollier shifted to virtual town halls, while Marshall continued to hold live events without a mask.

Neither campaign has responded to calls for comment.

In recent months, political analysts have labeled Marshall as the favorite in the race.

Kansas has not elected a Democratic Senator since 1932.
