Missouri’s governor race has tightened, non-partisan politics newsletter reports
Democrat Nicole Galloway has gained ground on Republican incumbent Mike Parson in the Missouri governor’s race, a leading independent political newsletter reported Tuesday as it revised its rating of the contest.
The Cook Political Report moved Parson-Galloway from “likely Republican” to “lean Republican,” meaning that while the GOP candidate still holds the advantage, the race is now considered competitive.
Reporter Jessica Taylor classified the Missouri match up as the “only (gubernatorial) race that has shown significant movement in the past few months.”
“Several factors, including increased spending from both national Republican and Democratic groups, along with strong fundraising from Galloway, competitive internal polling, newly up-for-grabs suburban areas and miscues on COVID from Parsons make this a more competitive race,” Taylor wrote.
Missouri joins Vermont as the only two states where Cook has changed its ratings of gubernatorial races. Among seven Republican incumbents running this year, Parson is the only one listed by Cook as a “lean Republican.” One is “likely Republican,” while the other five are ranked “solid Republican.”
