Kansan on USPS board of governors says embattled agency head DeJoy has full support
U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is under heavy scrutiny for management decisions and campaign finance practices, but he has an ally in Leawood resident and USPS Board of Governors member William Zollars.
The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Zollars, appointed by President Donald Trump and confirmed in June, remained supportive of DeJoy despite his recent removal of mail sorting machines from postal facilities and allegations that he encouraged former employees to donate to Republican candidates before reimbursing them under the veil of bonuses.
“He has 100% board support,” Zollars said of DeJoy in a phone interview with the Post. “From a logistics and operations standpoint, Louis DeJoy is as good as it gets. He has support on both sides of the aisle.”
Zollars led YRC Worldwide from 1999 to 2011 and has been a board member for Cerner since 2005. According to OpenSecrets, he’s primarily a Republican donor, with the exception of a $250 contribution to Barack Obama in 2008.
Other Kansas politicians have not been as impressed with DeJoy; Kansas Rep. Sharice Davids, for instance, called for his dismissal on Aug. 13. Zollars donated $1,000 to Amanda Adkins — Davids’ challenger in November’s election — on June 5, government records show.
Republican Sen. Jerry Moran also wrote DeJoy a letter in August, warning that the removal of mail sorting machine in locations like Wichita and Kansas City could have a “crippling impact” on rural communities that rely on the postal service for prescriptions.
