Funeral services set for Olathe Mayor Michael Copeland, who died last week at 58

Visitation and funeral services will be held Friday for Olathe Mayor Michael Copeland, the city’s longest serving mayor who died last week at the age of 58.

The visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. with funeral services at 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Friday at College Church of the Nazarene, 2020 E. Sheridan St. in Olathe. A private burial will follow the services.

A live stream of the funeral will be available at OlatheKS.org/OGN beginning at 4:15 p.m.

Copeland, who moved to Kansas from California to play football at MidAmerica Nazarene University, joined the Olathe City Council in 1993. He was elected mayor in 2001. While mayor, the city grew by nearly 50,000 residents.

Copeland also served on the Bi-State Commission, the KVC Health Systems board of directors, the Union Station board of directors and the University of Kansas Hospital Authority Board.
