Kansas City mayor proposes public dashboard to aid in police accountability measures

Mayor Quinton Lucas this week filed a resolution that would put certain statistics about the Kansas City Police Department on a public-facing, online dashboard.

The resolution, according to communications director Morgan Said, will be heard in the Special Committee for Legal Review on July 21. It could be voted on by the City Council as soon as July 24, Said said.

According to the resolution, the city manager would determine specific data points to request from the police department on a regular basis to create a performance management reporting dashboard with DataKC.

DataKC would be provided the information and would maintain it on the dashboard.

Lucas, in a statement provided on Friday, said he respects the work of the Kansas City police officers.

“I’ve said many times before that any issues with policing are not the result of one officer or interaction,” Lucas said, “but are due to failure by City leaders to address current needs of our community or rescind outdated laws.”

He said the dashboard would help identify areas for improvement to build “the best police department for our community and our officers.”

The resolution would supplement reforms to the Office of Community Complaints. Lucas said the resolution will also “help increase police accountability and build community trust—which will lead to better police-community relationships and a safer city for all.”

Said said Cincinnati’s dashboard, CincyInsights, was referenced during the drafting process.
