A group of nine conservative Republican lawmakers has lodged a complaint against a Kansas City, Kan., Democrat for using racially charged language during debate on an immigration bill.

The lawmakers accuse Democratic state Rep. Valdenia Winn of using inflammatory language toward anyone on the House Education Committee who supported a bill banning in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants. The bill was ultimately tabled.

Winn referred to supporters of the bill as “racist bigots” who were using “Jim Crow tactics” for “turning back the hands of time.”

The bill was ultimately tabled.

A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday on the complaint before the House Select Investigating Committee.

Under House rules, Winn can be reprimanded, censured or expelled with a two-thirds vote of the chamber.
