About 44 million Americans owe $1.4 trillion for student loans, statistics U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Kansas City Democrat, plans to address in a town hall meeting on Wednesday.

Cleaver will hear from concerned students, recent graduates and others affected by student loan debt in a town hall from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley, 3201 Southwest Trafficway. The meeting will be in the Education Center, Room 19.

“We must ensure that young people and students across America are able to stay in the classroom,” Cleaver said in a statement. “They should not be burdened with how they are going to survive after graduating due to overwhelming student loans.”

Cleaver encouraged people to come prepared to share stories and experiences.
