Nice weekend weather? That’s the perfect recipe for a fishing trip in Australia, according to Paul Dears and Christian Koenig.

That’s why the friends decided to take advantage of sunny skies in Gold Coast on Saturday, July 29, Dears told McClatchy News.

“Conditions on the weekend were looking really good so we just decided to take the boat. Fished a couple of locations and had no luck,” Dears said.

After a few unsuccessful attempts, the duo noticed something approaching their boat: A group of whales.

“All of a sudden these whales were swimming towards the boat, and then they started putting on a show,” Dears said.

A video of the encounter on Instagram shows at least two massive whales flipping and breaching. In the background, Dears’ dog, Sonny, is barking at the creatures.

“Got lucky this morning,” Dears captioned the video.

A second video posted by Koenig shows the whales diving in and out of the water while an alert Sonny barks at them.

Social media users shared Dears and Koenig’s excitement about the sighting.

“Oh wow and wow,” one person wrote on Koenig’s Instagram post. “How lucky were you??!!”

“Oh my god! This is amazing,” another person wrote on Dears’ post.

“That’s epic,” a third Instagram comment said.

Gold Coast is on Australia’s east coast, about 50 miles southeast of Brisbane.
