Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann's ex-wife does not plan to attend his sentencing hearing after he pleaded guilty to seven counts of murder.

Asa Ellerup "believes this day should be centered on the victims, their families, and the profound impact these crimes have had on their lives," her attorney, Robert Macedonio, said in a statement to People on Thursday, June 11.

"Out of respect for those who have endured unimaginable loss and suffering, she does not wish her presence to distract from the purpose of these proceedings," Macedonio continued. "Her thoughts remain with the victims and their loved ones as they continue their pursuit of justice, healing, and closure."

Macedonio did not immediately respond to Us Weekly's request for comment.

Heuermann, 62, is scheduled to be sentenced on Wednesday, June 17. His sentencing will take place two months after he admitted to killingMelissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Costello, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, Sandra Costilla and Karen Vergata in April.

While he was only charged for seven murders, he admitted to the eighth murder as part of a plea deal.

The remains of his victims were found in New York between 1993 and 2011. However, Heuermann wasn't arrested for the killings until 2023. He was linked to the murders by burner phones, as well as DNA from hairs that were found on some of the victims.

Ellerup, 62, has been open about the aftermath of her ex-husband's conviction, and she previously discussed the ordeal in Peacock's The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets.

While sharing her initial reactions to his guilt, Ellerup insisted there were no warning signs that he killed several women during their marriage. "There's no abnormal behavior that I had ever actually noticed. If there was any knowledge at all of some unusual behavior in that man, I would have walked out the door," she said in the three-part docuseries.

She also said she wouldn't believe Heuermann was a serial killer until he personally admitted it to her.

"I would need to hear it from Rex face to face that he killed these girls for me to believe it," she said. "My husband never kept me out of anything."

Ellerup did eventually come to terms that Heuermann was guilty when he told her he committed the murders.

The docuseries ended with Ellerup in her family's home basement, which is where Heurmann killed his victims.

"This whole basement looks very different. It's been completely gutted and redone," she told the cameras.

"The brutal truth is that Rex Huermann said he dismembered the bodies in this room. That is the brutal truth," Ellerup continued. "I'm in this room. And I'm here because I do feel spiritual. I am trying to say spiritually in my own way that I'm really sorry for what these victims went through. Every night that I go to bed and go to sleep, I am haunted by dreams."
