Sister of Michigan state rep run over, killed in Walmart parking lot, cops say
A woman was run over and killed in the parking lot of a Walmart when a driver hit her vehicle’s gas pedal instead of the brake, Wisconsin authorities say.
The victim in the Oct. 26 accidental crash in Saukville was identified in news reports as 50-year-old Mailee Xiong Hang, the sister of Michigan state Rep. Mai Xiong.
Police said a 74-year-old woman was attempting to park in a handicap spot at Walmart when she accidentally hit the gas pedal.
It caused her Ford Ranger to accelerate toward a walkway, striking Hang, according to police. She died at a local hospital.
“We heard a big bang. My fiancé started screaming, ‘Some woman just got hit,’” Les Wiedenhoeft, who attempted life-saving care on Hang, told WISN. “When I heard that crash, and then I seen a woman down, there was no thought process. It was just instinct. Ripping my clothes off to help the bleeding and help this woman.”
Police said no arrests have been made, but an investigation is ongoing “to ensure the accuracy of the driver and witness statements.”
According to a GoFundMe, Hang was a married mother of four described as “a gentle, selfless woman, always putting others before herself.”
Xiong, who represents the 13th District in Michigan, said her sister helped care for her and her younger siblings during their childhood.
“As a second mother to me, Mailee was truly a blessing,” Xiong said. “She was fierce, passionate, and always put her family’s needs first.”
“Mailee was loved by so many, she lived her life fully, unapologetically, and with so much passion and enthusiasm,” she added.
Saukville is about a 25-mile drive north from Milwaukee.
