When a man began sexually assaulting an Indiana woman in her home, she retrieved a gun and fired one shot, killing him, authorities say.

The Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department said the woman was acting in self-defense during the Sept. 28 fatal shooting.

She had invited the man to her home, but he began to make “several unwanted sexual advances” during the night, police said.

He later followed the homeowner into a room, where police said he started to sexually assault her. That’s when she grabbed a gun and shot the man to defend herself, police said.

Officers were called to the home and found the man suffering from a gunshot wound, according to police. He was taken to a hospital, where police said he was pronounced dead.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified him as Malik Phelixis Robinson, 30, according to WTHR.

Police said the woman was also hospitalized and treated for assault-related injuries.

Inside the home, investigators collected “several pieces of evidence,” which they said were “consistent with the telling of events by the female.”

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case to determine if charges will be filed, police said. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 317-894-3525.

Cumberland is about a 15-mile drive east from Indianapolis.
