What started as a bathroom break ended with shots being fired and a deputy being investigated in Ohio, officials say.

On Sept. 22, an off-duty Cuyahoga County special deputy was working a second job in East Cleveland and went into a porta potty to use the restroom, according to a news release from Cuyahoga County press secretary Jennifer Ciaccia.

While the deputy was inside the porta potty, at least one person tipped it over, officials said.

When the deputy got out, he said he encountered multiple people and one pulled a gun from his waistband, Ciaccia said.

The deputy then fired his gun, and the group took off in a car, according to officials.

Not long after, a juvenile, who officials believe was connected to the incident, showed up at a hospital with a gunshot wound. The 15-year-old boy’s family told WOIO he is expected to survive.

The deputy’s name was not released, and he is “identified as a Special Deputy who is not currently employed by Cuyahoga County; however, he maintains his police commission through the Sheriff’s Department,” Ciaccia said.
