Dad, 9-year-old daughter found dead in river days after vanishing, Ohio cops say
A father and daughter missing for several days in Ohio were found dead in a river, authorities say.
Oscar Garcia and Scarlibeth Garcia Montes — ages 28 and 9, according to news outlets — had last been seen alive around 5:45 a.m. on Sept. 11 by the girl’s mother, Dayton Police & Fire said in a Facebook post.
Garcia’s vehicle was discovered parked near Code Credit Union, which is near the Great Miami River, officials say. The girl’s shoes and socks, as well as keys, a tablet and a phone were also found near the body of water.
On Sept. 15, a 911 caller said they found a body in the river, officials said.
“I’m walking across the bridge and I’m looking out at the water and I do believe it’s a body right here,” the 911 caller said, the Dayton Daily News reported, citing Montgomery County Regional Dispatch.
Officials said they later located the second body in the river.
The victims were identified Sept. 16 as Garcia and his daughter, authorities said. It’s unclear how they ended up in the water.
Dayton Police & Fire said the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office would determine their causes of death.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the Garcia family and ask the community to keep them in their thoughts and respect their privacy during this difficult time,” officials said.
