A woman is accused of trying to kill her boyfriend with a hatchet as he slept at a home in North Dakota, according to police.

Police responded to a 911 call at about 5:40 a.m. Sept. 5 and arrived to find a man with “significant injuries,” the Fargo Police Department said in a news release. Lena Deoliveira, 23, was arrested two days later, police said.

Recently filed court records shed light on what happened that morning, and officials say Deoliveira is now charged with attempted murder, KVRR reported.

A man staying at the home Deoliveira shared with her boyfriend told police he awoke to screaming, then saw Deoliveira swing the hatchet down toward the victim, the station reported, citing records.

His view was partially blocked and he couldn’t see whether or not the hatchet connected, but he told police he heard a sound “like splitting wood, initially thinking she hit the headrest or headboard,” Inforum.com reported.

There was a large split in the boyfriend’s head and two of his fingers were “missing,” the witness told police, the outlet reported. Investigators said there was a blood trail at the residence.

The boyfriend was taken to a hospital for treatment and his fingers were surgically reattached, KVLY reported.

He told police Deoliveira attacked him without warning, the station reported.

Investigators didn’t say what may have motivated the attempted killing.
