A 7-day-old infant was fatally attacked by his family’s dog at their home in northeastern Indiana, officials say.

Officers with the Markle Police Department responded to a call about an infant bitten by a dog at around 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, the department said in a news release shared by the Huntington County Sheriff’s Office.

The newborn, later identified as Jason A. Weaver, was in critical condition when police arrived, and he later died at a hospital due to “multiple blunt force traumatic injuries,” the Huntington County Coroner’s Office said. The death is considered an accident.

Jason Weaver was 7 days old, according to the coroner’s office.

The family’s dog, which investigators said was a 5-year-old husky and pit bull mix, had no prior instances of violence reported to police, WPTA reported.

Markle is a roughly 25-mile drive southeast from Fort Wayne.
