A man’s headless body was discovered in an Indiana home, according to authorities and news reports.

Then, the victim’s head was discovered in a home where one of his family members was arrested, authorities say.

The Friday, Aug. 15, incident in Jeffersonville led to the arrest of Bryce Winnecke, who engaged in a standoff with police before his arrest, WLKY reported.

Just before 10 a.m., officers were dispatched to a home for a welfare check and found the victim dead in a “very apparent homicide,” Capt. Sam Moss said in a news briefing streamed by WAVE. The victim has not been identified as of Aug. 18

The investigation brought officers to a separate Jeffersonville home 20 minutes later, where they found a person of interest outside, Moss said.

The person of interest, later identified as 33-year-old Winnecke, was armed and retreated inside the home of his mother, policesaid and WAVE reported. A four-hour standoff then began.

After Winnecke surrendered, authorities found the victim’s head in the home, WIBC and WDRB.

Jeffersonville Police Chief Kenny Kavanaugh said Winnecke and the victim are related, but he did not elaborate on their relationship. A motive for the alleged killing is unclear.

“Let’s be mindful that this family is trying to work through this situation, something I would describe as a horrific crime,” Kavanaugh said, according to WHAS.

Police called the homicide an isolated incident and said there is no risk to the community.

Winnecke was charged with murder, WLKY reported.

Jeffersonville is about a 115-mile drive south from Indianapolis.
