Man spends his mom’s money, then dismembers her, MN cops say. He’s found guilty
A man accused of killing his 82-year-old mother and then dismembering her body has been found guilty in Minnesota, court documents say.
Troy Michael Mitteness, 58, was found guilty by a jury in Dakota County Court on one count of premeditated first-degree murder and one count of intentional second-degree murder in the death of his mother, Sandra Viola Mitteness.
According to McClatchy News, Mitteness was accused of stealing and spending all of his mom’s money, then stabbing his mother while she was in bed in June 2022. Court documents revealed that Mittenness was being investigated for mail theft in Burnsville in which proceeds were being deposited into his mother’s account in June 2023.
After police attempted to track down the victim for questioning, Mitteness told authorities she had died, according to court documents, which said he also told family members she had fallen down stairs and was in a hospital.
Authorities obtained a search warrant for Mitteness’s home and discovered blood stains on a mattress and box spring, which led him to confess he killed his mother because “he had spent all of her money” and she got “suspicious” wanting to see her finances, according to court documents.
The investigation revealed that Mitteness had been researching ways to painlessly kill an elderly person, authorities said. He later dismembered the body and placed parts in “multiple different large plastic tote bins” and disposed of the bins by tossing them from his moving vehicle into a ditch, according to the probable cause statement.
Mitteness was previously indicted in the death of the victim on Dec. 13, 2024.
His sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 19, CBS News reports.
Burnsville is about a 15-mile drive south from downtown Minneapolis.
