A woman tackled a man accused of shooting three people during a barbecue, Michigan authorities say.

The accused shooter was also shot during the Aug. 11 incident outside an apartment complex for seniors, according to Detroit Police Department Deputy Chief Arnold Williams, who said each of the gunshot victims were in their 60s or 70s.

Williams said in a news briefing streamed by WDIV that the incident began when a man complained about noise with people having a barbecue behind the apartment.

“He told them if they didn’t stop making noise, he was going to come down and take care of them,” Williams said.

The man later came down and opened fire, shooting three of the partygoers, according to police.

“During that time when he was firing shots, one of the individuals who was shot tackled the shooter (and) took him to the ground,” Williams said. “He dropped his weapon when a good Samaritan picked it up and, in self-defense, fired the weapon and wounded the shooter.”

Police said each of the four gunshot victims have non-life-threatening injuries. The man accused of opening fire on the partygoers is in policy custody.

“This is a shooting that is so ridiculous in nature that you can’t even explain it. We’re having an incident, again, when people can’t resolve common issues,” Williams said. “You don’t have to resort to a gun because somebody’s playing loud music. It’s just irrational. When you’re in your 70s, this should not be what’s going on.”

Police were unsure of the relationships between the victims but said they each live at the apartment complex.

Charges have not been announced. Williams said the investigation is ongoing.
