A 12-year-old boy is facing several charges after police say he burned his brother in a social media prank.

On July 29, the 12-year-old boy participated in a social media “hot water challenge” prank, according to an Aug. 5 news release from the Lancaster Township Police Department.

The boy boiled water in a microwave then poured it on his 9-year-old brother, who was sleeping, police said.

The 9-year-old was severely burned on his neck and chest and was taken to a hospital.

The Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and charged the 12-year-old with aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person, the police department said.

Police encouraged parents to monitor online use by kids and to check the “Parenting Tips for Online Safety” from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
