An 18-year-old man died while hiking near a towering Hawaii waterfall, police said.

Robert Carvalho was hiking with others Aug. 3 on the island of Maui “when he reportedly lost his footing and fell,” the Maui Police Department said in an Aug. 5 news release.

Rescuers had to reach him by helicopter “due to the location and height of the waterfall, which was estimated to be 120 feet,” according to police, who said “no life-saving measures were performed as (Carvalho) was determined to be deceased.”

An autopsy is planned, police said, adding there was no indication of foul play.

Carvalho was from the Makawao area of Maui, according to police.

He was hiking in the Hana Highway area, police said.

The “legendary” roadway filled with curves and bridges connects Kahului and Hana, the Hawaii Tourism Authority said, and it “leads you through flourishing rainforests, flowing waterfalls, plunging pools and dramatic seascapes.”
