Man playing with guns shoots and kills his 13-year-old sister, Michigan cops say
A 13-year-old girl was fatally shot as her brother was “carelessly playing” with guns, Michigan authorities say.
The 24-year-old accused shooter is now facing manslaughter charges following the July 29 death of his sister, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced Aug. 1.
Prosecutors said he was playing with two pistols in front of his minor sisters when one of the guns discharged, striking his 13-year-old sister.
First responders arrived to the Canton apartment within minutes, but the girl was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Canton Police Department.
Video from the home showed the man’s actions about 45 minutes before he is accused of shooting his sister, according to WJBK.
“The video shows him in possession of both firearms and I’d call it careless playing with the firearms, reenacting, anyway you’d like to categorize it,” Canton Police Deputy Chief Joseph Bialy said. “But it’s definitely careless behavior which we believe led to about a half hour later the death of his sister.”
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy called the accused shooter’s actions “dangerous and criminal,” referring to the incident as “completely preventable.”
The 24-year-old man was charged with involuntary manslaughter, careless discharge causing death and a separate firearm charge, officials say.
He was jailed on a $500,000 bond, according to prosecutors. The court would not allow him to attend his sister’s funeral, WXYZ reported.
“It’s still a family. It’s a tragedy that’s occurred with this family,” Sharon Grier, who is representing the family, told WJBK. “But there’s still love and concern for him, and they know they’ve lost someone special to them, but there’s nothing they can do to bring her back.”
The 13-year-old was described by loved ones as “smart, sweet, determined and so affectionate.”
Canton is about a 30-mile drive west from Detroit.
