Terminally ill shelter dog needs a loving human to help him complete bucket list
A sweet and energetic dog in Indiana is not only on the hunt for a home but also is looking for a particular type of human — one who will help him finish his bucket list.
The Humane Society for Hamilton County in Fishers has had an influx of senior animals that have been dumped by their owners.
“Animals are coming to us older than ever before. They’re coming to us at the end of their lives when they should be leaving this world in the arms of their owners, not ours,” the shelter said in a July 26 Facebook post.
“But even more, they’re coming to us at the point in life when time might be limited, but they’re still happy and capable of living a quality life. So, we’re seeking some pretty spectacular and adventurous humans to become a Bucket List Adopter so you can guide these animals through the final chapters of their lives.”
Enter Nitro, a senior heeler with a ton of life left in him who was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
“You would never know that this 10 year old Australian Cattle Dog has been diagnosed with early-stage metastatic liver cancer. He’s so full of life that we were all so shocked to learn this. He doesn’t require any intensive medical care at this time,” the shelter said.
“What we do know is that his recent blood work was pretty good--and he twerks when you scratch his hips! If that doesn’t pique your interest, then how about the fact he loves everyone he meets, he doesn’t mind our office cat, and he’s ready to meet your dog(s) right now.”
The shelter says Nitro is its first bucket list dog, so staff is working overtime to make sure all his wishes come true.
And those wishes, per the shelter, include:
- “One more shot at herding cats”
- “Find a partner in crime who is around during the day — he’s a quality-time kind of guy”
- “Soak up all the outside smells and sunshine on our walks”
- “Take over a couch and make it his throne”
- “All the marshmallows please”
- “Make sure my person knows how much this time meant to me”
