A family in Michigan is mourning after police say a 6-year-old boy wandered off and drowned at a family reunion, news outlets report.

A family reunion was taking place July 26 at Belle Isle Park in Detroit, according to the Michigan State Police, MLive reported.

Several kids were playing in a bounce house when the boy wandered off, WJBK reported.

Family members noticed the boy was gone and started looking for him and called 911, according to MLive.

Another child and an adult found the boy, who had autism, in a river, the Detroit News reported.

First responders gave the boy CPR and used a defibrillator on him, and one successful shock was delivered before he was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, according to the news outlet.

“Our heart goes out to this little boy’s family and also the first responders and community members on scene who did everything they could to try and save this child’s life,” Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw told WBJK.
